Subsequently, spark plasma sintering was utilized to sinter the compacts for both pure SAM7 powders and SAM7 + Y2O3 powders. A density of 7.76 g/cm3 was obtained for the pure SAM7 specimens sintered at 600°C for 10 min. The theoretical density of SAM7 was reported to be 7.75 g/cm3. Thus, the SAM7 specimens were found to be fully dense. The SAM7 + Y2O3 (2.5 wt%) specimens yielded a density of 7.30 g/cm3, which is lower than the theoretical density of 7.67 g/cm3. Scanning electron microscope images illustrated the even distribution of the Y2O3 nanoparticles in the SAM7 matrix. Energy dispersive spectroscopy showed that the compact was a composite rather than a solid solution of yttrium and oxygen in SAM7.
